Description

Farofa is a traditional Brazilian side dish made with toasted cassava flour, butter, and savory mix-ins like onions, garlic, and meat. It’s crunchy, flavorful, and the perfect pairing for grilled meats, beans, and stews.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup diced any meat (optional)
  • 1 cup cassava flour (farinha de mandioca)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: chopped parsley or green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
  2. Add the meat (if using) and cook until crispy.
  3. Stir in the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until soft and fragrant.
  4. Add the cassava flour gradually, stirring constantly so it toasts evenly without burning.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring frequently, until golden and crispy.
  7. Remove from heat and garnish with parsley or green onions if desired.

Notes

Farofa can be customized with extras like raisins, eggs, or sausage. Serve alongside feijoada, grilled meats, or rice and beans for a traditional Brazilian experience.
